The light at the end of the…

Posted on April 5th, 2008 by David

(David here) Well, we are home. Yes, we choose to drive home because, well, the weather was just bad bad bad. We had seen the light at the end of the tunnel and choose take it all the way home. Well, I had thought it would fit in the garage…

…but not quite. (No mom I did not really think it would fit.) But this really does put it into perspective on the size of the RV.

I will tell you all that we made it all the way home, my first time driving anything like this, especially at 42 feet long, and we did very, very will until I got stuck in our own driveway. Yes, passenger rear tires went off the driveway into the what only looks like grass but is in fact some creature that just wanted to suck the RV into it’s grasp to have it for it’s own. Nope, no way was I going to let that happen. After I realized we were no longer moving forward as as we were being sucked in, I grumbled a bit, and then let gravity help get us out. I put the rig into reverse and let the 34,000 pounds just roll on back out. As soon as I had the driveway again under the tires, I quickly moved forward without slowing. Few! We did leave some scars on that creature but they will heal.

I mentioned we choose to come home based on the weather, well here are a couple photos of what we drove in…

…it was like this most all the time after we left Florida. Could not even get out of the RV and walk around the parks if we wanted for it was all rain.

But we are home. As soon as I walked in and was run over by Tasha and ignored by the cats, we realized that out adventure really has just begun. We are home, the family, was fine, and we were missed.

But then I quickly remembered why we wanted to do this in the first place as I started to fix issues with the home like the lighting system. I remember thinking to myself last night, why am I doing this? We could just get in the RV and roll on out of here to another place. Less upkeep. Less to maintain. And then I thought, yes, but that also means less of family if always gone.

Until next time. This closes out our first travels as we are “home”.

The Windy Roads of West Virginia

(Brenda Here) We stopped last night, in West Virginia, at another KOA campground. This one was interesting. It was located behind a Days Inn Hotel and you actually check in at the hotel desk for the campground. Yeah…we made it before night fall! We got in around 4:30pm. Early enough that I was able to test out the washing machine and dryer. Cool. Here’s an observation. The further north we get, the less we have to make reservations at campgrounds. No RVers are traveling north. Hmmm, I wonder why. ha ha.

Well, my one word to describe West Virginia….SUCKS!!! I don’t think the people of West Virginia know how to build a straight road. When you have this many mountains and valleys, I guess there’s no choice but to make them windy. I do find it funny that as soon as we crossed the Pennsylvania border the roads straightened out and the rain stopped.

David’s playing around with the radio. We’ve come to the conclusion that we better start liking country music. Make note: When traveling, bring your own supply of music. We thought we were doing good by bringing both of our ipods. Nope. The ipod adapter that plugs into the cigarette adaptor doesn’t have a strong enough signal. It’ll work just fine for a car because the antenna on the roof is closer. But when your talking about your antenna being several feet away, like 10, it just doesn’t have enough power to work well.

We’re not too far from home now. Only another 300 miles. We may stop one more night. Just to relax a little. We’ll see. Who knows, we may be pulling up to your driveway as we speak. Ha, wouldn’t that be a site! Bye for now.

Hello from a KOA Camp

(David here) Ok, ok, again we did not get into an RV park until after 8 PM. Why? Tire balance issue. What does a 34 thousand pound RV look like at a time shop, something like this.

Yes, that is our new machine up on it’s own built in jacks with the front tires off. It seems what Dick Gore’s RV World had done to fix the balance issue I reported did not quite work well. Not their fault mind you, but we needed to stop as the vibration was more than I cared to deal with while driving.

Oh, here are some of the guys at the tire shop….Real nice guys btw.

their was also an issue in the rear as they were also out of balance. So, we had them check those also. Another 40 mins and we were off and rollin again.

Then came a stop for supplies at Wallmart where I needed, of all things, something to clean the bugs off the windshield. Let me tell you folks, windows this big seem to be the bug swatter of the road. I have never seen so many colors.

All in all, we will be leaving the KOA this morning and continuing our trek home. We think we will stop one more night, but this time early enough to at least enjoy some time that is not just pulling in and hooking up at night, making dinner at 9:00 and then going to bed only yo get up again to clean the windshield and leaving.

BTW…This entire trip we have been more or less winging it. Finding a RV park along the way using several books we have and the internet.

Here are shots from the road we will leave you with…

A Day of Rest…Finally

Posted on April 2nd, 2008 by David

Hi all. Brenda here. We decided to take a day off from the blogging world. Hope you don’t mind. Yesterday we spent another fun filled day at the Rv dealership. They had to finish up a few things. Thank goodness the parts they had ordered on Monday arrived. That would have been another headache.

We left there around 4pm and decided to just wing it. As long as we were heading north we figured we couldn’t get to lost. We stopped for the night in Georgia. Yeah!!! We are out of Florida! And when we stopped at the camp ground it was still daylight, and the office was open! That’s a first.

Leaving the camp ground around 10am we again have no plan, just head north. Here’s a hint for all of you traveling through Georgia….Don’t Speed! We saw at least 9-10 cops that had pulled over cars, RV’s, and tractor trailers. Did I mention this was in a 10-15 minute time frame? So take note.

Stopping at Cracker Barrel for breakfast. I know we have one in Henrietta but we’ve never eaten there before. Plus, it seems like a restaurant like that you need to be in the south to get the full experience :) It’s nice that they have special parking spots for RV’s and trailers. Easy on, easy out. Food was ok. I’d be just as happy eating at Denny’s for breakfast.

Wow, Georgia took shorter than expected to go through. I just saw a South Carolina Welcome Center sign. David’s having fun driving. He realizes that sitting this high up you can see inside of people’s cars. Being in the south, we just had a 350Z pass us with there top down. The woman in the passenger seat had nothing on but a bikini! Unfortunately for David, being a 350Z, there’s no way the RV can catch up to them for a second look. Not to mention, eyes on the road please.

I think I’m going to put my feet up now in the recliner and enjoy the view for a little bit. Aaahhhh.
