Quartzite Main Event Opens

Main Tent Opening Day

The main event in Quartzite opened today.  What a crowd.  Shoulder to shoulder people.  Everything you can imagine is here.  You can get burned out real easily here if you try to take it in all in one day.

After we wandered for a good portion of the day, we went back to our rv for lunch and some rest.  At least I thought we’d rest.  Nope.  David thought he’d hook up the new reverse osmosis (RO) system that he installed to the refrigerator water/ice maker.  Good idea.  We only had it hooked up to the separate water faucet in the kitchen sink.  Now we can have chilled RO water whenever we want.  A lot of rver’s get into RO water because the water supply around the country is so different.  Down here in the south, it’s full of minerals and such.  So much that it’s not really something you should drink directly.  In fact, David took a water purity testing kit to the water here and it tested not fit for human consumption.  There’s actually water filling stations all over the south down here that you can take your own giant water tubs and fill them.  We were not only worried about our health in drinking the water, but Tasha too.  There’s only so much bottled water one can carry around in an rv.  So this solves that problem.

Another day tomorrow of more vendors and shopping.  Oh darn.  Then we really have to figure out where we are going after Quartzite.  We are planning on leaving Monday, but we don’t have any idea were too yet.  It’ll be interesting, I’m sure, where ever we end up.

Arriving at Quartzite, AZ

Well we made it to Quartzite, AZ.  Our friends were right, it is a sea of rv’s!  We luckily found parking in a lot close to the main tent.  But not to close, if you know what I mean.  The main event starts tomorrow.  Huge tent with vendors, vendors on the street, carnival food…what more can I say.  There’s so much here to look at and do.  Oh boy, I feel some long days of walking ahead of us.  Good thing we’re close enough to go back to the motorhome and take a nap.

The Gang Waiting For Lunch

The gang wanted to go into Mexico.  They said we have to go to this place for lunch.  The best tacos around.

So here we are.  This is much different than going on a cruise ship or flying in.  I find it funny that Mexico does not care who comes into there country.  The sidewalk leads right into the shopping district.  No border patrol.  No passport needed to get in.  Just come in and spend your money.  Of course the first thing you see when you are in Mexico….drugs.  Of the pharmaceutical kind.  A lot of the senior citizens cross over to Mexico to get there prescription drugs there.   It’s much much cheaper.  Especially if you do not have insurance.

The gang was right…very good tacos.  Of course we had to do a little shopping to.  Mostly browsing though.  When you travel in a motorhome, you have very limited space.  So if you buy something, you better have a use for it.  No needless spending here.  That’s not necessarily a bad thing.  We ended up buying some pastries.  There’s always a use for baked goods…YUM!

This is where you walk across

David in Prison…

David Entering Yuma Territorial State Prison

OK.  So David is not really in a working prison.  We toured the Yuma Territorial Prison which is an Arizona State Park.  Stepping into the cells you really get an eerie feeling.  It was opened in 1876 and was decommissioned in 1909 due to overcrowding and lack of an expansion area.  Believe it or not, the Yuma Union High School occupied the building after that from 1910 – 1914.  I think that gives “being sent to the principles office” a whole new meaning.

Interesting place.  If you ever needed an incentive to do the right thing, visit a prison.  That’ll set you straight!

Just a quick note that we made it now to Yuma, AZ with 3 other couples who are trvaling with us, or us with them.  We all came from the FMCA Rally together and will be here until Friday when we all move on to Quartzite together . We are looking to walk into Mexico on Tuesday for Taco’s.  (And the other members need to get their prescriptions filled.)
