Geocaching!

When we arrived at Lake Tamarisk RV Resort in Desert Center, CA David had a surprise waiting for me. He had ordered a hand held GPS unit so we could go Geocaching together. This is why we have not updated our blog for a few days. We’ve been having way too much fun!

Geocaching is basically a scavenger hunt that uses a hand held GPS unit that you follow to certain coordinates. Then you look for a cache.

Geocaching is global. Their are millions of caches hidden all around the world. Traveling around in a motor coach can give us an opportunity to geocache anywhere.

When we opened the GPS unit and went online to the Geocaching website, we were surprised to find many caches hidden around the desert where we were.  So off we went.

Our first geocache, in the evening, was a nice 2 mile walk around the rv park and lake.  As we were getting used to reading the GPS unit, we finally found our first cache!  Yeah for us!

The next day…off we went again.  Not knowing where we’d end up.  Little did we know we’d be climbing a mountain!

But there it was, on the back of a really interesting marker on the side of the mountain.  We never would have seen the marker or climbed the mountain if it wasn’t for Geocaching.

Geocaching takes you to many places that you really would not go, unless you were looking for a cache.

Out in the desert…

I alas did not make it.  Half way up I decided that was high enough.  So I decided to sit on a flat rock and enjoy the scenery.  David made it all 1196 feet!  I’m so proud of him.

All in all, we are having fun.  Going to new places, unexpected places.  When we arrive in Indio we’ll have to see what’s around there!

Oh I forgot to mention Trackables!  People hide these trackables in some caches, so when you find one, which in our case was a monkey key chain, you take it and move it to a different location.  Then you go up on the website and you can “track” where this trackable has been by a serial number every one has.  We found the monkey key chain trackable, in the desert by Desert Center, CA, and plan on hiding it in Indio somewhere, when we find a good cache location.
