So what’s there to do in Mackinaw City other than tractor and truck parades?
Well….Quite a bit.
There’s a cute downtown area that is filled with shops. Souvenirs, restaurants, lots of t-shirts, sweatshirts and jackets. Plus this area is famous for their fudge so there is no shortage of fudge shops.
David’s favorite though was the taffy shop.
For those of you have not met us or may not know, David is a taffy connoisseur. He always seems to find the taffy shop.
And boy was this a great shop! Great people with wonderful attitudes. And they make it fresh everyday. What more could you ask for?
Of course our dentist is probably not too happy with all this taffy eating going on. Or maybe he is.
What ever way you look at it, it’s a lot of taffy. We of course had to buy a large bag of assorted taffy that we picked out from their bins. After our purchase the owner handed us a coupon for “buy one pound, get one pound free”.
Of course this was after the sale. Smart man. He knew we were hooked.
So what did we do? Yup…we went back a few days later and bought those two pounds of taffy. So now we have taffy in every nook and cranny of the motorhome. It’s so bad that I have found taffy in David’s pockets before I’ve thrown his clothes in the laundry.

I wonder if their is a taffy addiction helpline. Or spousal support group for a taffy addict.
I’ll have to look into that.
So…what else did we do?
There is Colonial Machilimackinac, A Heritage Village, Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park, An Icebreaker that you can tour and many other things.
We did non of these. No time. Weather was rainy some of the time so it really wasn’t that conducive for exploring. Next time…because I have a feeling we’ll be coming back here. Maybe not anytime soon, but we’ll be back.
We did do a free museum on the history and making of the Mackinac Bridge.
It’s located in this pizza shop on the main street, which BTW, I highly recommend you don’t eat at. We ordered two slices of pizza, took one bite and threw the rest away. It was that bad.
But I digress. The museum was interesting. Small…very small but interesting.
They had a movie playing in a loop all about the bridge. It was a little long for our taste. But it had some interesting info on the bridge.
I would recommend this museum if you are in the area, but it’s not worth it to make a special trip to this area.
What is worth the trip to this region is Mackinac Island. I’m going to hold off on telling you about that until the next post. There’s just so much to tell.
I can tell you the only way to get there is by ferry boat.
We took the catamaran ferry and we’re glad we did. Coming back from the island the wind had picked up and the waves in the lake were pretty high. They were making white caps and it looked like the ocean. So we were thankful for the steadiness of the Cat.
Plus it was cheaper than the other ferry. So their is that.
Looking at that head-on picture of the Catamaran, one can clearly see that way in the future, the designer of the Starship Enterprise will base his blueprints on…right down to the placement of the antennas…on what he considers, will be, a nostalgic design. He ( or quite possibly, she) want to honor those, who in the distant past, forged their way across the mighty seas of the planet Earth. Due to a sad occurrence, which will remain nameless, the designs of many other vessels (or “wessels” as a future pilot will call them) were sadly lost. It will be only due to a dedicated monk, who had the foresight to secure this design in a safe archive of an obscure pizza parlor back room, that this design called a catamaran, was not lost with all the others!
The genius who will be able to incorporate the latest technological advances, while maintaining the basic elements of the aforementioned catamaran, will make this discovery while indulging in his hobby of archeology. He will specialize in the exacting task of unearthing the remains of places in the Western Hemisphere of his home planet where folks once indulged in the delicacy called “PIZZA”. This was a strange compilation of various edible elements apparently popular with a high number of inhabitants living many centuries ago…which he was fascinated by since learning of it in his history classes. What especially intrigued him, was the apparent ability of this antique concoction to be classed as either good or bad in taste. How was this possible is the question he will keep foremost in his mind as he takes vacations from his “real job” of starship design.
During one of his digs in an area formerly known as Mackinaw City, he will be exploring a site formerly classed, by the foremost exploration team of the past mysteriously known only as “D&B”, As “not so good”. This pair was often quoted in history for their opinions on the strange delicacies of their time. They apparently traveled, boldly going because they could, from place to place rendering such classic phrases as “Mmmmmm” or “Bleecht” on eateries of their time. He will see that the opinions of this pair were highly valued and so sought after that they were forced to go by their initials in order to protect themselves from the masses of paparazzi of their time. At one such place, in the city known as Mackinaw, he will pull aside six bricks by something known as a “brick oven” and low and behold find something then known as…a picture! Not just any picture, but one taken by none other than “B”!!!!!!
His excitement will be boundless as he sends prayers of thanks to the monk who had the foresight to protect such an artifact! In his unbridled imagination he will begin to see how his assignment to design the next generation of starships could incorporate elements of this antique vessel! The rest, as they will know it, will be history!
Just think about it!
Linda…You really need to stop replying to blog posts and write a book :) You always have the best stories and imagination.
But we do appreciate your comments. They always make us laugh. So thanks for that sis!
