Part of the 28 mile road through the Petrified Forest is the Painted Desert. Incredible! Here you are looking at desert and petrified wood from millions of years ago. You turn a corner and WHAM! You’re staring at the most beautiful pinks and reds and browns that make up the Painted Desert.
We were at this point of our journey around 3pm. The sun was getting lower in the sky.
As you can see, we had a beautiful day to visit the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. It was blue sky, sunshine and no wind.
Can you imagine what this place would look like when the sun is setting. I bet that is a sight to behold. It was starting to get late for us. We still had a two hour drive ahead of us and we were getting burned out. Starting the Petrified Forest at 9am and not finishing until after 4pm. All that fresh air and sunshine. We were getting wiped out. Plus my camera was out of battery power. So I have limited pictures of this area, as it was last on our tour.
So when you find yourself driving along I40, a stop into the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert is a must. It is only a 28 mile road through the park, easily driven by a big rig like us with plenty of parking spots along the route. But plan on at least an all day adventure. And please, make sure your camera has a full battery.
It’s interesting to follow your journey… we took a similar trip some 7 years ago, we loved it out there so much!
Yes, it was nice out there. As you know then, the pictures really do not do it justice.
